Gas Appliance Flood Checks

Gas Appliances Pose Danger Post Flooding

In the wake of Queensland's flooding disaster a number of normally safe ''around the house dangers'' begin to bare their teeth for people as they return to their homes.

The Master Plumbers’ Association of Queensland (MPAQ) is warning people of dangers caused by the recent inundation which they may not be aware of, in particular the problems being caused by LPG gas cylinders and gas appliances.

Checking gas appliances needs to be a priority after such events with a mammoth influx of dirt and debris into residences. A primary concern is the impact this will have on LPG breather vents. MPAQ President Mr Bob Kimlin says residents need to contact a licensed gasfitter immediately should they suspect any issues such as:

  • LPG and natural gas regulators - breather vents could be blocked and cause problems with gas supply pressures

  • Gas appliances and gas hot water systems including cook-tops, BBQs and heaters should be checked if flood water submersed the appliance

  • Gas appliances with electronic components should be inspected by a trained professional

Mr Kimlin says home owners also need to remember that gas regulations exist when they are in the recovery phase. All gas fitting work should only be performed by a licensed gas fitter. “Using a licensed gas fitter ensure all repairs performed on your household or business receive Certificates of Compliance, which ensure the safety of the property and compliance of all work completed.”

As soon as it is safe to do so, the gas networks operator will visit areas which were inundated to ensure that gas services are restored safely. If your property has been affected by flood, a notification tag will be attached to the gas meter, advising that the gas installation must be checked by a licensed gasfitter and a Compliance Certificate issued before the gas supply can be restored.
