Electrical components affected by flood water

18-Jan-2011

Master Electricians recommend

With the partial and complete submersion of so many households and businesses, there is going to be a large amount of affected electrical components within the electrical installation of these premises. Even though the damage may not be apparent now, the components reliability has been extensively compromised.

Flood waters consist of large quantities of silt and toxins that will have penetrated/contaminated any components that have been submerged in the flood waters, leaving them full of debris and causing severe corrosion of the internal metals and components exposing the extreme level of probable failure and not allowing items to function effectively as designed.

The only items that may be of use and unaffected if cleaned correctly will be things such as buss bars, fuse holders and most cables types. Please be aware older cables may also be affected.

The risk of re-energising flood damaged components is a risk all contractors should not be willing to undertake, and we recommend they be replaced. The risk to you is too great and unnecessary.

It is highly recommended that all electrical components that have been submerged, be removed and replaced for the safety of all.
